141 Years of Ministry
On June 12, 1869 the church was organized with eighteen charter members, but for two years worship services were held in the Methodist Church.  In August 1871 the congregation occupied its newly  constructed red brick place of worship, the first of four erected on the present site.  This was a two-story building with the second floor being used for worship while the ground floor was rented to provide income for the church.  This space was utilized in various ways through the years--as a warehouse, a private school, and as a lodge, concert and lecture hall.
By 1889 the membership had outgrown this first building and it was decided to erect another.  There is hiatus in the records but it is inferred that the construction of the second church occurred in 1890 or 1891.
In 1918 the second church was torn down and the first segment of the present structure was built.  Early in 1919 it was occupied free of indebtedness.  The growth of the membership warranted an educational addition and in January 1929 an annex was completed and furnished.  The debt on this was retired in 1937.
Early in 1967 another addition to the church was dedicated.  This building stands today, having been redecorated and remodeled many times to meet current needs.
On February 11, 2000, the members of First Baptist Church voted to build a Christian Life Center.  This addition, which would sit on the location of the old church parsonage, would contain a basketball court, drama stage, kitchen, suspended walking track, racquetball court, game room, and sitting area in the foyer.  This building was designed to provide space and resources to enhance current ministries and to provide new ministry opportunities.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on January 5, 2003, and excavation of the site began on January 20.  Members watched as the building slowly developed from a hole in the ground to a completed structure that could be used for the glory of God and for the work of His kingdom.  A building dedication service was held on Sunday, April 18, 2004, and the building is currently in operation with numerous activities on the schedule.
