Course Description
You are about to embark on a marvelous journey. Physics is the most fundamental science, its content can be found in all areas of the universe, from the tiniest of all particles to the stars in the heavens. Physics principles unify the sciences and incorporate mathematics in an attempt to explain our universe in the simplest of terms. It is the goal of this class to teach you about your physical world and hopefully generate some interest in the physical sciences. Knowledge is power, so the more you know about this world you live in the better off you will be. You do not have to be an astrophysicist to marvel at a beautiful sunset and wonder why it is so colorful, or you do not need to be a chemist to appreciate the lovely color and fragrance of a rose. But with the knowledge of how these things work it can lead to a deeper understanding of your place in this vast universe in which we live, and how we are all connected in such an intricate pattern.

Homework
Your homework in this class will be a vital part of your success or your failure. It is very important for you to keep up with your reading and try to devote some time every day to studying your physics. Studying is more than doing your homework on any given night. It is reading the text thoroughly, working example problems, reviewing you lecture notes, doing outside reading on various topics, preparing for labs, preparing questions for the next class session, etc.

Topics/Chapters to be covered
I. Motion, Forces, & Gravity (Chapters 1-6, 12 & 13)
II. Momentum & Energy (Chapters 7 & 8)
III. Electricity & Magnetism (Chapters 32-36)
IV. Waves & Quantum Mechanics (Chapters 25, 27, & 38)
V. Other topics if time permits

Labs
Lab work will be an integral component in your study of physics. Please read each lab exercise carefully and observe all lab safety rules. There will be periodic lab exams, which will consist of lab skills that you will demonstrate and a written component that will cover the principles brought out in the lab exercise.

Grades
Your grade will be computed using the total point system, typically using the following point values:
A. Tests/Lab Reports/Portfolio Entry 100 points
B. Lab Work 5-50 points
C. Homework 5-50 points
D. Quizzes 5-50 points
E. Final Exam 1/7 of final grade

*** Note: The instructor may amend this syllabus at any time deemed necessary.

Addendum
In accordance to MSHS policy the following class rules will be observed at all times:
